FM23 – 1992/93 Database – Blackburn Rovers – Ep 03

Yes, I’m back. This one came out of nowhere after I fell out of love with playing my Torquay United / Nottingham Forest save. We’ve got Torquay to the Championship before a poor start to the season saw us sacked. Then join Forest who were recently relegated to the Championship. We won the league and league cup that year before going on to win a European Conference Cup before jumping ship before being pushed!

I left that save as needed some time away from it and found this one! I wasn’t sure I’d even be writing again before FM24 but here we go. The 1992/93 season database!!!

I rmember promising a few big signings now we’ve made it into the Champions League after finishing 2nd place to Manchester United. You have to remember that this is the time when the Class of ’92 started coming through into the first team. Giggs is already tearing it up beging a year older than the rest.

But we start with singing a 19 year old HernĂ¡n Crespo for £5 million. Still a bit of progress to be made as a player but hoping to have him learn from Shearer and Yeboah.

Then we needed to do something about the defence. So I look to Slaven Bilic who we signed from Manchester City for just under £20 million and Igor Stimac who we were able to sign from fellow Premier League side Luton Town for under £10 million.

After those two we wanted to sure up the wings with a bit of quality. After searching, we found Paulo SĂ©rgio and Dejan Savicevic who can both play on both wings so I’ll probably use them interchangeable. They cost £17.5 million and £26 million respectively.

Could we have done it a little cheaper? Probably but we’re making good money with a really low wage bill and now we’re in the Champion’s League, we’ll be making a lot of money from that so I’m happy with the deal.

We also sold a few players at a total of about £22 million which means for all the quality we brought in, it only cost us about £55 million which isn’t bad.

I felt good about the squad and wanted to start the season better than we did last season against Norwich. That’s what we do and beat Middlesbrough 5-2 at home. This started a decent run where we only lost once to Manchester United and drew with Aston Villa 2-2 in a run that lasted until the end of November with only wins!

But that shock loss to Chelsea saw a bit of inconsistency and at Christmas we were sitting 4th. I wanted to sort out a bit of defensive training since that’s where we could improve since we were shipping a lot of unnecessary goals.

And come the new year I was hoping for a bit of good fortune and the practise in training to have paid off. We beat Wimbledon 2-1 and I thought things were looking good but a big loss to QPR 5-2 meant we still had work to do!

I stuck at it and the remainder of the month was unbeaten including a 2-2 draw with Liverpool which should have been a win except for two late goals in the last 10 minutes.

As for the cups, we lost to Oldham in the League Cup third round early on in October which was unfortunate and the FA Cup didn’t start until after the new year.

But the Champion’s League saw us test ourselves against some big teams which we did well. We beat Sparta Prague, Anderlecht and even Real Madrid. Draws with Benfica and Sampdoria saw us needing a few more points from the final few games in January against Roma and Ajax and that’s what we did picking up 4 points from those fixtures. We’d qualified for the first knockout round.

As the training picked up, we found ourselves coming into a bit of form. We only lost once in the league to Tottenham in February, March and April as well as to Peterborough, which was embarrassing, since I played a second team to give them a bit of match experience and save them for the Arsenal game. That back fired massively!

But we also had a Champion’s League knockout game against Inter to play. We lost the first leg 4-1 which was disappointing meaning we needed to score a load of goals in the second leg.

The second leg was once of the most exciting things I’ve ever experience in this game. We had to come back from being behind several times and Rivaldo eventually scored an 85th minute free kick to level the aggregate score to 8-8 and away goals meant we were going through! This was battling back from needing 4 more goals at half time!

But we gave away a penalty in injury time that was scored and meant we lost the tie 9-8. Gutting!

It did give us time to concentrate on the league and with 5 games to go we are trailing Manchester United by 9 points with both of us having quite an easy run in. They only need two wins to be crowned champions again.

We beat Derby 2-0 with Shearer and Rivaldo getting the goals and our eyes turn to Manchester United to see if they stumble. But I didn’t notice that they have a Champions League game this week so no league game. The wait goes on!

Aston Villa next and a fun game winning 4-3 with a Shearer hattrick. We now go to 3 points behind Manchester United but they have 2 games in hand so if they win those, it’s over but we are putting the pressure on! I do think 2nd place is confirmed though! Over to you Manchester United!

10 minutes into our next game against Sheffield United we find ourselves up 3-1. I have a quick glance at the United game and see they are 2-0 down to Southampton already! We couldn’t, could we???

Full time as we finish 8-3. What a game! And United? Well they did lose 2-0 in the end to Southampton who are struggling down at the bottom of the table! That win also ensures we are playing Champions League football next season! And two games remain for us and Manchester City up next. They could do us a favour and roll over and Everton could beat United and I’ll start believing! But until then, it’s tight!

Manchester United beat Everton 4-0 so that’s one of their 2 wins they need. And half time in our Manchester City game and we’re 3-0 up. Keeping that pressure on United!

The game ends 5-1 and we move on to the final game against Leeds. United have a few fixtures to fulfil in the next few weeks including the remaining league games and a FA Cup final against Liverpool. They’ll also be looking forward to a Champions League final against the team who knocked us out, Inter.

Manchester United beat Norwich 3-1 and will win the league. We’d need to overcome a 21 goal difference to win the league but are setting a new points total record. It’s going to be hard to beat this United team! But We’ll get there!

Stats this season are as follows including some more crazy numbers from the attacking trio of Shearer, Yeboah and Rivaldo!

And that’s a wrap for this season. Still no trophies yet but two 2nd places in the league. We need to concentrate a bit more on the cup games next season and we’ll see if there are any more legends available for purchases!
